Gershman Acoustics Black Swan review
Flag Ship Model
The cutting edge speaker. Getting to the core of the music
Premiered at the Montreal Show 2005 and enjoying its US debut at HE 2005,
the Black Swan is our new state-of-the-art loudspeaker. It features a
patent-pending nested cabinet design wherein the bass module is completely
separate from the head unit yet visually perfectly integrated. The bass
module can be slightly moved front and aft to create perfect time alignment
at the listening position.
In a full-range speaker, all frequencies (low, mid and high) are reproduced
by dedicated drivers mounted on the same enclosure. This can contribute to
a poor stereo image and lack of clarity in the vocal and treble ranges.
Some speakers use a separate subwoofer that is placed arbitrarily in the
room. Because of the physical design, it is not possible to time-align the
bass with the mid and high frequencies.
Our new SSAS — Separate Sub Alignment System — in the Black
Swan speakers is designed in such a way that the high and mid frequencies
have a separate enclosure that stands on its own and forms a bridge-like
super-enclosure to accommodate the discrete bass enclosure underneath that
bridge. This maintains the time alignment between the two enclosures yet
prevents resonance from the bass module to interfere with the performance
of the mid and high frequencies. This guarantees a clearer sound, higher
micro-detail resolution and more precise and stable three- dimensional
imaging.
The Swan’s S.S.A.S. patent-pending design addresses all the
weaknesses conventional box speaker designs suffer. Our bass enclosure is
completely separate from the mid and highs so those are as free from
cabinet resonance as possible while maintaining minimal baffle area around
the tweeter and midrange for best dispersion - and, the speaker retains all
the benefits of proper time alignment.
